How Fleeti tracking works

Fleeti tracking works in four successive steps, from data capture on the asset to the operational decision. The same process applies to powered vehicles, construction machinery and non-powered assets, so you can consolidate the whole fleet in a single dashboard.

Three connection methods to suit your fleet

A mixed fleet often combines recent factory-connected vehicles, older vehicles, multi-brand machinery and non-powered assets. Fleeti offers three connection methods that coexist on one platform, so you track your entire fleet without silos.

Fleeti tracking by business use

Fleeti tracking runs on very different fleets, from construction sites to company cars. The features are the same, but what you manage differs by industry.

Construction

Construction

On construction sites, you separate engine idling hours from actual working hours to bill accurately. Machinery fitted with standalone IoT trackers stays traceable even when parked for weeks without power. Site geofencing alerts you to any exit outside scheduled hours.

Fleeti vs a typical multi-vendor setup

Tracking a mixed fleet often means combining several providers: one for powered vehicles, another for construction machinery, and a third for non-powered assets. This fragmented setup multiplies contracts, interfaces and skills to maintain. Here is how Fleeti compares with a typical multi-vendor setup on the criteria that matter to operations managers.

Frequently asked questions about fleet tracking

How do you track a vehicle fleet in real time?
To track a fleet in real time, you fit each asset with a device that sends its GNSS coordinates to a central platform. Fleeti combines three technologies in the same interface: direct connection to manufacturer (OEM) data for eligible recent vehicles, an on-board telematics device (also called a truck GPS tracker on heavy vehicles) for detailed CAN bus reading, and standalone IoT trackers for skips, trailers and non-powered machinery. Positions are reported at high frequency while moving, consolidated on a single map, and trigger alerts according to your business rules (geofencing, out-of-hours use, zone exit). Your data stays hosted in the European Union.
How accurate is a professional GPS tracking system?
A professional GPS tracking system is usually accurate to within 3 to 5 metres under normal reception, by combining GNSS constellations (US GPS, European Galileo, Russian GLONASS). That is precise enough to identify the traffic lane, the destination address to within a few metres, or passage through a specific area of a site. In challenging environments (tunnels, underground car parks, dense city centres), accuracy can drop temporarily. Most professional devices then use on-board memory to store positions and send them once reception returns.
How does geofencing work and which alerts can be configured?
Geofencing means drawing virtual zones on the map (a site, a depot, a customer, a national border, a no-go area) and triggering an alert as soon as a vehicle or machine enters, leaves, or stays beyond a planned time slot. In Fleeti, you create as many zones as you need (circles, complex polygons, route corridors) and configure different alerts by email, SMS or mobile notification. Typical triggers include a machine entering a site outside working hours, a rental vehicle leaving the country, an overrun of the planned time at a customer site, or a deviation from a planned route. Beyond notifications, the Fleeti interface also lets you trigger corrective actions directly from the platform, such as remote immobilisation on compatible vehicles and machinery.
Can construction machinery and non-powered assets be tracked?
Yes, and it is one of Fleeti's specialities. Powered machinery (excavators, loaders, backhoes, aerial work platforms) is fitted with a telematics device compatible with ISO 15143-3 / AEMP 2.0, which reads engine hours, fuel use and fault codes from the main manufacturers (Caterpillar, Komatsu, Volvo CE, JCB, Liebherr and others). Non-powered assets (rubble skips, trailers, generators, containers, valuable power tools) get a standalone IoT tracker with a long-life battery sized to the configured reporting frequency.
Is company vehicle tracking compliant with the GDPR and CNIL recommendations?
Yes. In France, employee tracking is strictly regulated by CNIL decision no. 2015-165 of 4 June 2015 and by the GDPR. Four conditions must be met: prior notice to the driver and employee representatives, an explicit stated purpose (activity management, safety, theft prevention), a limited data retention period (usually 12 months, 24 months maximum outside disputes), and the driver's right to access their own data. Fleeti has a built-in privacy mode, switchable from the dashboard or by time slot, which stops location reporting outside business trips. Your DPO receives the documentation needed for your record of processing activities and your impact assessment.
What is the difference between an OEM manufacturer connection, a telematics device and an IoT sensor?
The three connection methods complement each other. The OEM manufacturer connection reads factory telematics via API, with no hardware to install and no work on the vehicle: ideal for eligible recent vehicles and long-term lease fleets. The Fleeti telematics device, plugged into the OBD-II port or hard-wired, reads the vehicle's CAN bus in depth (exact odometer, fault codes, instant fuel use) and picks up additional sensors (fuel probes, temperature probes, driver identification). The standalone IoT sensor, stuck or screwed onto the asset, runs on a long-life battery and suits non-powered assets or older machinery. Fleeti lets you combine all three on one platform.
What happens in an area without GSM coverage?
When a vehicle passes through an area without GSM or 4G coverage (tunnel, valley floor, underground car park, some rural or industrial areas), the telematics device keeps recording all positions and engine data in its on-board memory. As soon as the network returns, the full history is sent to the platform, which rebuilds it in chronological order. No data is lost. On standalone IoT trackers, the on-board memory can store several days of positions during an extended outage.
How does Fleeti tracking compare with solutions such as Samsara, Webfleet or Quartix?
Fleeti focuses on a specific segment: mixed fleets that combine powered vehicles, construction machinery and non-powered assets, mainly in France, the Indian Ocean and West Africa. Compared with Samsara, Webfleet or Geotab, Fleeti offers a single platform that brings vehicles and machinery together, where these providers often require several modules or separate products. Compared with Quartix or SuiviDeFlotte, Fleeti extends coverage to multi-brand machinery via ISO 15143-3 and to non-powered assets via IoT sensors. Compared with Trackunit, Fleeti also covers company cars and the related tax. A personalised demo helps assess the fit for your fleet profile.

Tracking is now a management system, not just a map to look at. When you see your trucks, excavators and trailers on the same interface, you stop switching between three software tools. You bill accurately, cut losses and meet your customer commitments. And you respect your drivers' privacy, because it is the law and because that is what gets teams to accept the system.
