How Fleeti calculates the eco-driving score

The Fleeti eco-driving score is a mark out of 100, calculated continuously from four driving indicators measured by the on-board telematics device or OEM manufacturer data: acceleration, braking, speed and cornering. Each indicator is weighted by road type, so urban drivers and long-distance drivers are compared fairly.

Launch a measurable eco-driving programme

An effective business eco-driving programme has three successive phases: measure a baseline before any training, build team momentum through challenges and targeted coaching, then continuously track ROI on fuel savings, accidents and avoided emissions. Fleeti automates all three phases from a single interface.

01 - Measure the baseline

Frequently asked questions about business eco-driving

What is an eco-driving score and how is it calculated?
An eco-driving score is a mark out of 100 given to a driver based on objective measurement of their behaviour at the wheel. Fleeti combines four indicators: acceleration, braking, speed and cornering. Each event is weighted by road type (urban, rural, motorway) and speed at the time. The score is colour-coded (green above 80, orange between 50 and 80, red below) and calculated continuously on every trip. It requires no input from the driver and remains comparable from one driver to another, whatever their type of journeys.
How much fuel can an eco-driving programme save?
According to ADEME, a measurable eco-driving programme reduces fuel consumption by 10 to 15% on average across a business fleet. The best results come from fleets where initial training is followed by continuous in-cab coaching and regular score reviews. On a fleet of 100 vehicles using 8 litres per 100 km and driving 25,000 km a year, a 12% saving represents about 24,000 litres a year, or more than €40,000 at current diesel prices. An eco-driving module built into fleet management software usually pays for itself in under twelve months.
Does eco-driving really reduce a fleet's accident rate?
Yes, and the results are measured. Fleets that set up an eco-driving programme with in-cab coaching see reductions of up to 50% in emergency braking, 23% in harsh starts and 30% in low-speed collisions in the first twelve months. Fewer accidents have a direct impact on three costs: the fleet insurance premium (renegotiable on an objective claims history), the excesses paid by the company, and downtime caused by vehicles off the road. In France, work-related road accidents are now a full part of employer responsibility, governed by the LOM law and the mandatory risk assessment document (DUERP). Road accidents remain the leading cause of work-related deaths in France, so driver safety is about more than money.
Is driver scoring GDPR-compliant?
Yes. Fleeti strictly follows the framework set by the CNIL for on-board telematics and driver scoring in businesses. Driving data is only collected during business trips, drivers can switch to privacy mode for personal journeys, rankings are anonymised by default, and every driver can access their own data. Scoring is a support tool, not a disciplinary one: no behavioural data can be used in disciplinary proceedings without informing the driver first. Fleeti provides your DPO with the documentation needed for your record of processing activities and impact assessment.
How does Fleeti avoid drivers feeling spied on?
Fleeti scoring is designed to feel like a personal development tool rather than a surveillance instrument. Three principles shape the driver experience: rankings are anonymised by default, drivers see their score before their manager does, and coaching is delivered discreetly in the cab as tips rather than punitive alerts. Gamification (team challenges, recognition for the biggest improvements) shifts the focus from individual control to team momentum. Feedback from Fleeti customers shows this approach wins buy-in where intrusive systems (constant audible alarms, public rankings) cause pushback.
Does every vehicle need a device to use eco-driving?
Not always. Fleeti offers two data collection methods. The first is the on-board telematics device, connected to the vehicle's CAN bus or OBD port, which measures every indicator with maximum accuracy. The second is a device-free connection through OEM manufacturer APIs (Renault, Stellantis, Volkswagen, Mercedes, BMW, Ford, Volvo, Tesla and others), which activates eco-driving in under 24 hours with no work on the vehicle, provided the manufacturer makes driving data available. Both methods coexist on the platform, so you can manage a mixed fleet in a single dashboard.
What is the difference between a safety score and an eco-driving score?
The two overlap widely but serve different purposes. The eco-driving score mainly measures behaviour that burns fuel and wears vehicles: acceleration, idling, speed and anticipation. The safety score adds behaviour that creates road risk: not wearing a seatbelt, distraction, phone use and insufficient following distance. Fleeti calculates both scores in parallel from the same data, so you can run a savings-focused programme, a safety-focused programme, or both, depending on your priority.
How are savings measured and reported?
Fleeti continuously calculates three ROI indicators that can be exported to your finance department and ESG reporting. First, cumulative fuel savings: the volume not consumed compared with the baseline measured before the programme, valued at current fuel prices. Second, accident trends: number of serious events, cost of claims and change in excesses paid. Third, CO2 emissions avoided: calculated using an auditable Scope 1 method and ready to include in your CSRD reporting. All these indicators are available by vehicle, driver, site and overall, for any period you choose.
